We have an immediate opening for a PhD student researcher to join a cutting-edge research project conducted in cooperation with the Medical Faculty of JKU / Kepler University Clinic and the Interdisciplinary Transformation University Austria (IT:U) in the field of Personalized Technical Medicine (PTM). The project focuses on neuromorphic computing for the prevention of decubitus (pressure sores) in bedridden patients using signals from pressure sensitive mats. The focus of this position is to research and prototype an embedded spiking neural network (SNN)-based system capable of efficient threshold-based data acquisition, pre-processing, and embedded SNN acceleration. The selected PhD student will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of experienced researchers, closely collaborating with another PhD candidate who will focus on the data science, models and machine-learning aspects of the project. PhD researcher position in the field of Neuromorphic computing - spike-based sampling and learning for a full-time, three-year-position (with option of extension) at the Institute of Signal Processing for the projects "PURE/NEUROSKIN+" within the framework of the Upper Austrian Research Initiative Personalized Technical Medicine (PTM)

Job Duties:

  • Perform research both independently and in a team
  • Completing a doctorate/PhD degree in engineering
  • Provide support and academic advising to bachelor/master theses
  • Present your scientific results in publications at international scientific conferences and in scientific journals
  • Participate in administrative and organizational tasks of the hosting institutes
  • Participate in public relations activities of the JKU faculty

Your Qualifications:

  • The candidate must have a completed Master-equivalent degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related field such as Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics
  • Solid background in one or more of the following areas: signal processing, machine learning, digital hardware implementation, electronics, microcontroller development, FPGA-based prototyping
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team
  • Fluency in English (level C1), no knowledge of German required
