The Department of Neurology, with a focus on Neurocritical Care, is seeking for a highly motivated PhD-Student (at least 30 hours/week, Master's degree required) for the project "Predicting Recovery of Consciousness via Evidence-based Evaluation and Diagnosis" (PROCEED) funded within the Upper Austrian Research Initiative for Personalized Technical Medicine (PTM).The position is initially limited to three years, with the option of extension. The aim of the Upper Austrian PTM Research Initiative is to set new standards in medical technology research through close, cross-institutional collaboration (between JKU, IT:U and FH OÖ). In particular, the initiative aims to drive forward the development of personalised prevention, diagnosis and treatment solutions, to promote innovative research projects at the interface between medicine and technology, and to strengthen Upper Austria's position as a centre for science and innovation in the long term. (PROCEED) is an interdisciplinary collaboration between TNF, MED, IT:U and KUK. The project combines clinical neurology, neuroscience, artifical intelligence and biomedical engineering to advance personalised care for patients with disorders of consciousness. As a PhD student, you will contribute to translational research spanning the entire patient journey, from bedside monitoring in the neuro-intensive care unit to long-term follow-up assessments. Working closely within the interdisciplinary PROCEED team and its collaborators, you will be immersed in a unique learning environment at the interface of clinical research, neurocritical care, and data analysis. This three-year fixed-term post as a university assistant (PraeDoc researcher) offers structured supervision, experience in multimodal monitoring and patient assessments in the neurological intensive care unit and comprehensive scientific training. The aim is to develop both subject-specific and interdisciplinary skills and to prepare candidates for a successful academic career.

Job Duties:

  • Completion of a doctoral dissertation as part of the Ph.D. program
  • Management and support of research projects at the Department of Neurology, including project planning, methodological implementation, documentation, analysis, and interpretation of experimental approaches
  • Conducting measurements and data collection within clinical studies in the Neurocritical Care Unit
  • Participation in infrastructural and organizational tasks
  • Compilation, analysis, interpretation, and publication of research data in scientific journals and at conferences
  • Maintaining and expanding research networks within and outside Johannes Kepler University (JKU)
  • Contributing to scientific publications and reports
  • Participation in teaching activities
  • Supervision of Bachelor's and Master's students

Your Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate must hold a completed Diploma or Master's degree in Human Medicine
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in direct patient care
  • Experience in university-level teaching is an advantage
  • Excellent German and English language skills (minimum C1 level in both German and English)
  • Strong teamwork skills, reliability, and a service-oriented mindset
  • Ability to work independently with a well-structured approach
