Senior Scientist (Diploma/Master) (substitute employee)

Start date/duration:

  • from 26.01.2026
  • to 30.09.2026, but only until the return of the jobholder

Administrative unit:

  • Department of Archaeology

Job Description:

Main Task 1: Organizational duties in the Microarchaeological Laboratory 50 %

Organizational and administrative tasks; consulting on sampling strategies and participation in sample collection for microarchaeological analyses; supervision of laboratory staff; conducting analytical procedures; preparation of laboratory reports.

Main Task 2: Independent research in the field of Microarchaeology 25 %

Research in the field of microarchaeology (e.g. Geoarchaeology, bioarchaeology); participation in research projects of the Department of Prehistoric and Early Historic Archaeology and/or the Research Centre HiMAT.

Main Task 3: Independent teaching 25%

Design and delivery of research-led teaching; supervision of students.

Qualification Profile

  • Completed university degree (MA/MSc) in geoarchaeology, a bioarchaeological discipline, or an archaeological field with a specialization in Prehistoric and Early Historic Archaeology.
  • Excellent knowledge of geoarchaeology (preferably micromorphology), bioarchaeology, or prehistoric and early historic archaeology, preferably from settlement contexts.
  • Practical experience in geoarchaeological laboratory work
  • Field experience in archaeological excavation and prospection, as well as in sampling for geoarchaeological analyses
  • Publication record in the above-mentioned fields, preferably in international peer-reviewed journals (Please include three relevant publications as PDF or provide download links)
  • Research experience in prehistoric and early historic archaeology in Central Europe and the Alpine region
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing research projects of the Department of Prehistoric and Early Historic Archaeology
  • Excellent computer skills (GIS, databases)
  • Driving license (category B)
  • Language skills: excellent command of English; very good knowledge of additional modern languages is an advantage Social skills: strong organizational, teamwork, and communication skills
